Is my Panini sticker fake? How to spot a counterfeit

Most stickers that get called fake are genuine stickers from a different edition. The Latin American edition is printed with no white border, and genuine packs vary in color and centering too. Real fakes give themselves away in the paper, the print and the back, so compare yours to a sticker you know is genuine.

Why it happens

Panini prints the World Cup album in more than one edition. In the US and Canada, stickers have a white border. The Latin American edition, printed in Barueri, Brazil, has no white border. Both are genuine Panini, with the same players and the same numbers. When a collector who knows only one edition sees the other, it looks wrong.

Fakes are real too. In May 2026, police in Rio de Janeiro seized about 200,000 counterfeit stickers from a bus. In June, inspectors in Goiânia pulled 2,268 more off shop shelves. Panini itself warns that it doesn't sell through Facebook or WhatsApp, and that counterfeit packs are circulating. That's why it pays to know the real tells.

How to tell

Check Genuine Fake
Feel Firm, smooth, satin paper Rough and thick, or thin and flimsy like office or photo paper
Print Sharp faces and crests Blurry, pixelated, dots visible up close
Back, top band Reads "FIFA WORLD CUP 2026", with the rounded tournament "2026" and a bold team code and number ("FRA 20") Plain font, or the words in the wrong order ("2026 FIFA WORLD CUP", "ARG10")
Back, overall Panini and FIFA printing crisp and legible Blank, smudged or blurry
Pack Holographic Panini front, and it names where it was made. Panini says Argentine packs read "Industria Argentina" Missing either one
Price About $2 a pack Far below retail
Seller Can say where the stickers came from Can't. In Goiânia, the shops had no invoice

Best test: put it next to a sticker you know is genuine, in the same light, front and back.

Myth Busters

Myth "No white border? It's fake."

Busted It's the Latin American edition. It's printed without the white border, and it's genuine Panini with the same players and numbers.

Check instead the paper, the print and the back.

Myth "The color is off, so it's fake."

Busted We open factory-sealed packs and see teal and blue shades vary, and backs come in lighter and darker gray. Colored borders (blue, red, purple, green, black) are genuine parallels Panini makes on purpose.

Check instead whether the print is sharp, not the exact shade.

Myth "Mexico's flag is a different shape, so it's a mistake or a fake."

Busted Every other team's flag is cut into the curved FIFA bubble. Mexico's is a full rectangle on purpose: Mexico's law on national symbols doesn't allow the flag to be altered. It's the same in every edition.

Check instead nothing. A rectangular Mexican flag is how the genuine sticker looks.

Myth "It's off-center, so it's fake."

Busted Genuine packs come with crooked cuts too. Panini replaces defective stickers through the store that sold them.

Myth "My back looks different, so it's fake."

Busted Each edition has its own back. The US edition has a QR code for the virtual album. The Latin American back has no QR code, carries Portuguese and Spanish text, and reads "Made in Brazil by Panini Brasil Ltda." Others read "printed in Italy."

Check instead compare against a genuine back from the same edition.

Myth "It says Panini on the back, so it's real."

Busted Fakes copy the back too. Look at the top band: the words, their order and the font.

Check instead "FIFA WORLD CUP 2026," with the rounded 2026.

Myth "It's shrink-wrapped, so it's new and genuine."

Busted Collectors who bought the blue USA special edition album straight from Panini say it came in bubble wrap, not shrink-wrap. Copies sold on eBay for $50–$100 arrived sealed, lighter and with printing errors. Collectors call them Chinese copies.

Check instead the weight, the cover and the flags.
